Solar Data

Current Solar Data

The results obtained when Operating on the HF and lower VHF bands depends, among many other variables, on how the Suns radiation is affecting the Earths Electromagnetic fields. Enhanced or poorer than average communications, particularly on the HF bands is generally a sign that some sort of Solar event has taken place.

In general, the more active the sun is (higher number of sunspots for instance), the better the communication is for long distance contacts on the upper HF bands.

The above image of the sun shows the current state for Ionised Iron (Fe) at a wavelength of 28.4nm and a temperature of approximately 2,000,000 degrees Celsius.

The Data is updated every three hours and is provided by Paul Herrman N0NBH from his excellent website HF Propagation and Solar Terrestrial Data to which you are referred to for a much more detailed description of the factors in the above table.

In the link below, Paul Harden NA5N gives a simplified summary of the main effects of changes in the numbers and although written for QRP (Low Power) operation is applicable generally.
